Peter Dorhout

Peter K. Dorhout brings a distinguished record of research, teaching, service and administration to his position as vice president for research.

Dorhout became dean of the university's College of Arts & Sciences in January 2012, previously serving as vice provost for graduate affairs and assistant vice president for research at Colorado State University and as interim provost for Colorado State University, Pueblo. He became the interim vice president for research in December 2015 and was named the vice president for research effective April 1, 2016.

Among his many achievements are developing and raising funds for the Undergraduate Research Institute for Colorado State's College of Natural Sciences, developing a graduate student retention plan, and creating a strategy to boost the experience of postdoctoral researchers. Dorhout also was involved in creating, funding and leading partnerships between Colorado State and higher education institutions in Asia. He also served as the campus leader responsible for creating the collaborative Colorado School of Public Health between CSU, the University of Colorado, Denver and the University of Northern Colorado. At Kansas State University, he has led strategic planning in the College of Arts & Sciences and the Office of the Vice President for Research, developed and initiated a successful $100 million fundraising campaign, and has advanced the research enterprise through careful attention to compliance, safety, systems integration, intellectual property management, corporate engagement, and economic development.

His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. State Department. He is a member of several professional organizations, including a life member of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science and serves or has served on the board of directors for the American Chemical Society, the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, and the Boy Scouts of America-Coronado Area Council. He is an Eagle Scout and Rotarian.
